7. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bridgeport
544 Bridgeport Rd. E., Kitchener,
www.stpaulsbridgeport.weebly.com,
Built 1956,
Design: Barnett and Rieder, Kitchener,
This simple, modernist church building, soon to be demolished to make room for redevelopment, is the work of one of Waterloo Region’s most prolific and noteworthy postwar architects, Carl Rieder. The St. Paul’s congregation celebrates 158 years in 2019, and will be continuing on this site, but this is one of the last chances to see the 1956 building. Inside, it is particularly unchanged, and exemplary of its period in design, with many of the hallmarks of Rieder’s church designs. The building is in excellent condition, and this is a great opportunity to experience a largely unaltered mid-century interior. The original architectural plans will be on display.
