31. Knox's Galt Presbyterian Church Queen's Square, 2 Grand Ave. S., Cambridge, Built 1869 design: James A. Smith, Toronto, Knox’s Galt celebrates 150 years in this grand Gothic Revival church, and also 175 years as a congregation. This is one of the larger church buildings in Waterloo Region, and also among the oldest. It displays skillfully executed stonemasonry in limestone and quarry-faced grey granite, with excellent, proportions, a six-storey tower with an 1830s bell, a slate roof, large pointed-arch windows with tracery, and two of the region’s very few architectural grotesques: enigmatic carved stone faces at the main entrance. Inside, a deep gallery with an intricate metalwork railing runs the width of the vast nave. Elegant arch braces bearing delicate ornament support the high, shallow-pitched ceiling. Ten stained glass windows were added in 1938 when the side galleries were removed. • Parking • Full Wheelchair Access • Washrooms
