24. Carmel New Church and School
40 Chapel Hill Dr., Kitchener,
www.carmelnewchurch.org @CarmelNewChurchKitchener,
Built 1962, 2002,
Design: John Lingwood, Kitchener (1962),
Arguably the crowning achievement of John Lingwood, one of Ontario’s more imaginative mid-twentieth century architects, this church and its original school wing exhibit his dedication to fine materials and unconventional forms. Symbolic geometries and their meaning in Swedenborgian traditions are expressed in three dimensions. Fieldstone, horizontal ribbons of windows, and an abstract, wood-shingled roof that looks like origami, all create a one-of-a-kind building, verging on sculpture. Inside, the wood, stone, white terrazzo, and dramatic angles produce subtle effects of light, colour, and sound. The 1962 school wing ties in beautifully with the church. The congregation purchased the original property from a church member and built a community where families could live near church and school. The immediate area remains primarily a New Church community; many students live within walking distance of the school. Musical performances during Doors Open – check www.carmelnewchurch.org for details.
