Construction and consultation has concluded.

Welcome to the project page for the Laurelwood Multi-use Path Connection.

The City of Waterloo intends to replace the existing sidewalk with a new asphalt multi-use path between the existing connections in Old Oak Park and the trail between Creekside Drive and Birchmount Drive. The city successfully applied to the Investing in Canada Program (ICIP) COVID-19 Resilience Stream grant, which will help fund this work.

This project includes replacing the existing sidewalk with a community multi-use path. The multi-use path will be a minimum of three metres wide to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, completing a major link in the city's active transportation network on Waterloo's west side. Two mid-block uncontrolled crossings will be constructed within the Laurelwood Drive median to help connect users with the existing trails. By linking these trails and neighbourhood schools with a path wide enough for both pedestrians and cyclists to observe safe distancing while using, we hope to encourage more users and increase active transportation trips in Waterloo.

These improvements were recommended as a priority project in the Transportation Master Plan 2020 Update approved by Council in April 2021.

The city has retained the local engineering firm WalterFedy to provide engineering services for the design of this project.

Details regarding the current status of this project are available on the News Feed section of this site (such as the Project Information) and will be updated as the project progresses. If interested, please take the time to view the preliminary designs and project information and provide feedback in our Comments section.

We're excited to share that construction of the new multi-use-path is starting!

To safely accommodate the construction, there will be some temporary lane closures on Laurelwood Drive as well as temporary restricted access for some residents on the north side of Laurelwood Drive.

Residents and visitors of Birchmount Drive and Cedar Bend Place:

Access to Laurelwood Drive from Birchmount Drive and Cedar Bend Place will be restricted between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays from July 6, 2022 until approximately July 22, 2022.

Access to Laurelwood Drive from Birchmount Drive and Cedar Bend Place will be permitted via Cedar Bend Drive. Traffic control measures will be in place during working hours. Laurelwood Drive will be fully opened to all traffic on a nightly basis when construction crews are not on site.

Residents and visitors of Brookmill Crescent and Brookmill Place:

Access to Laurelwood Drive from the west leg of Brookmill Crescent (between Laurelwood Drive and Beaverwood Street) will be restricted between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays from July 6, 2022 until approximately August 5, 2022.

Access to Laurelwood Drive from Brookmill Crescent and Brookmill Place will be permitted via Beaverwood Street and the east leg of Brookmill Crescent. This project will provide a separated off-road active corridor connecting users between the existing trail connections in Old Oak Park and the trail between Creekside Drive and Birchmount Drive. Multi-use Path

The existing sidewalk on the south side (the same side as St. Nicholas school) will be replaced with a new asphalt multi-use path, a distance of approximately 450 m.

Laurelwood Drive multi-use trail connection plan, showing the existing multi-use trail through Old Oak Park, and the planned 3 m wide asphalt connection along the south side of Laurelwood Drive to the existing multi-use trail west of Birchmount Drive. Proposed work includes an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing of Laurelwood Drive at Old Oak Park, a proposed concrete landing pad for GRT bus stop on the north side of Laurelwood between Brookmill Crescent and Holly View Place, an improved school and pedestrian crossing at Holly View Place across from St. Nicholas, and another uncontrolled pedestrian crossing at the existing trail connection west of Birchmount Drive.

Typical cross-section for the Laurelwood Drive multi-use trail. From the centreline of Laurelwood Drive, the existing median will remain, with an existing 3.25 m vehicle lane and existing 2 m buffered on-road bike lane, concrete curb and gutters, proposed sod boulevard and proposed 3 m asphalt multi-use trail. The proposed multi-use trail will painted for two-way directional use for both pedestrians and cyclists.

    Construction

To meet the timelines of the Investing in Canada Program (ICIP) COVID-19 Resilience Stream grant process, the design was advanced and completed at the end of 2021. The design was tendered early 2022 and construction is scheduled to take place between July and August 2022, with completion targeted before the start of the new school term.

Prior to construction, you may see city teams on site to stake out approximate property boundaries, complete preliminary relocation of utilities and prepare for the contractor to begin work. Further updates will be provided closer to construction.

These improvements were recommended as a priority project in the Transportation Master Plan 2020 Update, approved by Council in April 2021.
