In 2020, the Region of Waterloo's Regional Official Plan projected that Woolwich Township would reach 51,000 residents by 2051. To prepare for this growth, the Township applied for the Federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) in 2023 and secured funding in 2024. As a result of this funding, the Township engaged MacNaughton Hermsen Britton Clarkson Planning Limited (MHBC) to develop Mixed Use Urban Design Guidelines, scheduled for completion in 2025.
These guidelines will shape the future of urban development in key mixed use areas such as Elmira, St. Jacobs, and Breslau. Once completed, they will provide a comprehensive framework to guide the design of mixed-use communities, ensuring they are vibrant, functional, and sustainable. The guidelines will focus on creating walkable, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods that balance residential, commercial, and public spaces, and will help developers integrate best practices for urban design, green building techniques, and public amenities.
