Trussler Road
About the project
The Region of Waterloo is improving Trussler Road, from Bleams Road (southern limit) to Yellow Birch Drive in the City of Kitchener and Township of Wilmot. Potential improvements include widening from two to four lanes as identified in the 2011 Regional Transportation Master Plan (RTMP) and the 2018 RTMP Update and installing active transportation facilities through the Active Transportation Network Strategy.
The Region is in the early stages of a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA), with construction anticipated to run from 2027 to 2029 as per the Regional Council-approved 2024 Transportation Capital Program.
The cost of this project will depend on the approved improvement alternative, as well as necessary infrastructure relocations and property acquisitions. Funding of $12.58 million for improvements on Trussler Road is included in the Region’s 2024 Transportation Capital Program.

J. Thomas asked 6 days agoOnce the active transportation component of this project is determined, the detailed engineering process will be able to assess this, considering several factors including available right of way width, grading and tie-in, accesses between intersections/roundabouts, etc.
The Ministry of Transportation is assessing the required interchange upgrades.

Share Why is the road being considered for widening, when we need to create a transit option and discourage use of private vehicles? Joseph B asked 7 days agoForecasted traffic volumes are expected to increase in this area with or without road modifications, and by widening the road we can better accommodate possible future Grand River Transit services in this area. Increasing capacity on the road will minimize idling and delays to improve future transit services.

Share When will be Fisher Hallman road a 4 lane road between Rosenberg Way and Huron Road? Can we plan a 401 exit from Trussler in the next 2 years? Can we make 4 lane Trussler from Bleams to Huron Road in the next 2 yeras? I think we need to plan roads ahead, instead of fire fighting constantly. Waterloo Region Must Plan and execute these plans faster! We need to be innovative and the leader in developments for the future. Niko asked 18 days agoThe widening of Fischer-Hallman between Rosenberg Way and Huron is scheduled for construction in 2026 and 2027.
The Region previously examined the issue of a Hwy 401 & Trussler Road interchange, but this location was not preferred (improvements to the existing Cedar Creek Road interchange are a better option). There is currently no plan to advance a Trussler Road interchange at Hwy 401. If you have any further inquiries related to provincial highways please direct them to MTOINFO@ontario.ca and the Ministry of Transportation will get in touch with you.
Widening of Trussler from Bleams to Huron is not currently planned. The Region continually evaluates its road network for widening on the basis of needs. Needs are determined by looking at current traffic and forecasted based on population and employment growth (i.e. new developments). The Region’s 2018 Transportation Master Plan examined Trussler Road and determined that it would not need to be widened south of Bleams Road for the foreseeable future. This conclusion was reached based on the City of Kitchener’s permitted developments within its Official Plan and the lack of anything significant to connect to that would generate additional traffic. The Region will update the Transportation Master Plan in the near future that will take another look at roads like Trussler Road to determine if the need and timing for widening should be adjusted.
