City of Kitchener hosts free Public Works Week activities to showcase valued public works services

In celebration of National Public Works Week, May 21-27, join the City of Kitchener online or in person to learn more about the important services delivered by public works professionals. This year’s theme, Connecting the World Through Public Works, illustrates how public works connects us all not only physically, such as through maintaining transportation networks and facilities, but also by enhancing the quality of life for residents in Kitchener through services providing safe drinking water, parks and green spaces, facilities and so much more.

They’re everywhere, working day and night for you and your family. Kitchener public workers care about our community and deliver important services that make our city a great place to live, work and play.

“From the water we drink to the parks we enjoy or the roads we drive on, National Public Works Week is the perfect time to celebrate the amazing Public Works staff at the City of Kitchener who deliver the services that help make Kitchener a great community to live in,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “I encourage residents to register for the upcoming free, family-friendly events to help young minds to learn more about the services we deliver and maybe even inspire some of them to consider careers in public works.”

Family fun night

Join us for a Family Fun Night and go behind the scenes to learn how services are delivered, tour the Kitchener Operations Facility, check out vehicles and equipment, explore community partner booths, and enjoy fun games.

On Wednesday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Kitchener Operations Facility (131 Goodrich Drive), the City of Kitchener invites family, friends and the community to experience the exciting world of public works and learn more about what public works professionals do in their day to day to ensure the community has clean water, safe roads to drive on, amenities such as parks and facilities, and so much more!

To register for Family Fun Night, fill out the registration form online before Wednesday, May 17.

Learn about public works

As part of the celebrations, the City of Kitchener is hosting a virtual Public Works Week presentation and Q&A session on Tuesday, May 23, from 11:15 a.m. to 12/noon. This virtual session is aimed at students in grades 3 to 5, although participants of any age are welcome to attend. Registration is required.

In this session, you will learn about:

• energy in buildings,
• drinking water and conservation,
• and how skateparks are designed.

Join us for an opportunity to learn more about public works careers service delivery, what you can do to conserve energy and water, and take part in the design of parks.

“Public Works Week is a great way to learn more and show appreciation for the amazing and dedicated women and men who deliver the many public services we enjoy in our day-to-day lives here in the City of Kitchener,” added Ward 8 Councillor Margaret Johnston, Chair of the Community and Infrastructure Services committee.
