two winter shovels - one blue, one orange

This year, the City of Kitchener has been clearing snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your property during Snow Events as we test new approaches to tackle winter in Kitchener.

Based on the bylaw standard, Kitchener residents are required to clear their sidewalks of ice and snow to bare pavement within 24 hours, once snowfall has stopped. When an additional snowfall occurs within the 24-hour period, the ‘clock’ is reset, giving residents another 24 hours to clear their sidewalks.

In your neighbourhood, crews contracted by the city have been performing this sidewalk clearing whenever a Snow Event is declared. Click the "Pilot Map" tab to see the pilot area.

A Snow Event is declared by the city when credible weather forecasts predict a significant snowfall. Sign up here to receive notices about Snow Events.

Snow Events are also announced on the City of Kitchener’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, as well as at kitchener.ca/StormUpdates.

Your feedback will be critical in evaluating the program’s overall success. By completing our survey, your perception of a city-managed sidewalk clearing program will help us understand if a service of this type is warranted.
