Seasonal Road Closure Program

The City of Cambridge, in partnership with our local Business Improvement Areas, closed sections of some core area roads to vehicles from May to October, 2022 in order to create safe pedestrian-friendly spaces for the community.

These road closures were part of a pilot Seasonal Road Closure Program and allowed many businesses to expand patios and provided open space for walking, shopping, and dining.

Road closures took place from May to October and included:

• Queen Street East in Hespeler, between Guelph Avenue and Tannery Street (Each weekend, Friday to Sunday)

• Main Street in Galt, between Ainslie Street and Water Street (24/7 closure)

We want to thank all those who participated in the 2022 Seasonal Road Closure Program Survey. The results from our surveys showed that:

• 99% of respondents were aware of the road closures.
• 78% of total respondents like the idea of seasonal road closures while 87% of respondents who attended the road closure like the idea of seasonal road closures.
• 87% of those who attended the road closure like that these roads were closed to create pedestrian areas. When asked why they liked this idea, 619 positive responses were received with the majority being related to the area being more pedestrian friendly, improving the atmosphere of the area and increased presence in the core areas.
• 85% of respondents visited the road closures and responses show that a variety of activities were enjoyed including dining, attending events, and walking with most of respondents enjoying a combination of activities.
• 90% of respondents who attended the road closure would like to see the road closure continue in future seasons while 80% of total respondents (visited and not visited) would like to see the road closures continue in future seasons.
