A new playground is being planned at Sault Park to meet the need for diverse recreation opportunities in the neighbourhood. The playground will be located off McMeeken Drive on the east side of the existing property. It's proposed to include basketball and climbing equipment that is engaging to older children and teens. This playground will be an alternative option to the existing playground on the west side that is located off Pratt Place and designed for younger children.
In December 2023, public consultation was completed for the west playground and some respondents outlined a desire to play basketball in the neighbourhood. Although this activity was not planned for the equipment replacement on the west side of the park, the comments were taken into consideration as part of the new playground being proposed on the east side.
The costs for the proposed climbing equipment at Sault Park East have kindly been offset by a donation made to the City of Cambridge from the Cambridge Highlands Lions Club. The equipment will be installed with engineered wood fiber safety surfacing, meet Canadian Standards Association (CSA) requirements for ages 5-12, and also meet CSA criteria for safety and accessibility. (What does CSA criteria mean for City parks? Click here for common accessibility questions.)
Community Engagement
Community participation is essential to provide feedback about Sault Park East. A two-phase consultation will take place to hear from the public about the park amenities proposed. Respondents are asked to give feedback on the survey results that were received and provide additional suggestions.
Complete the survey below in the "Park Survey" tab and interact in the "Community Ideas" tab to share feedback! The Phase 1 survey and 'Community Ideas' page will be open from April 3rd to April 30th, 2024.
Please note that certain considerations will be taken into account when designing the park, such as the budget and maintenance of the amenities but also ensuring there is a balance of activities for visitors to participate in.
Refer to Image 1 below and the caption to review the existing and proposed features at Sault Park.
Image 1: Sault Park is bordered by McCormick Drive to the south, Melran Drive (intersected by Pratt Place) to the northwest, and McMeeken Drive to the east. Park entrance points by vehicle are accessible from Pratt Place and McMeeken Drive, with pedestrian path access from all surrounding streets. A natural forested area sits centrally within the park abutting McCormick Drive. The pedestrian pathway is asphalt and connects through all the built site features. The existing Playground near Pratt Place is located to the west of the natural area, with the Ball Diamond to the north, the soccer field to the northeast, and the gravel parking lot to the east. The proposed basketball nets and climbing equipment geared to older children and teens are planned to be adjacent to the parking lot with clear sight lines from McMeeken Drive.
