Route 79 Flex Breslau

Route 79 Breslau is Grand River Transit’s new flexible transit service. Route 79 will operate as an eight-month pilot, providing transit service to the town of Breslau and nearby destinations, including Region of Waterloo International Airport. Route 79 connects to GRT’s transit network at Victoria and Lackner.

For information about Route 79 Breslau, including hours and areas of service, using the service and fares, please visit the Route 79 Breslau page on the GRT website.

Project background

In 2019, Grand River Transit and Metrolinx partnered to engage the community and design an on-demand transit service in Breslau. Metrolinx is the provincial agency delivering GO Transit services and responsible for transit coordination across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Why Breslau?

Breslau is a fast-growing and economically-important part of the Region that currently lacks direct transit connections, and will be home to a future GO Transit station. On-demand transit has the potential to provide convenient and affordable transit service to Breslau for the first time, and create connections to existing GRT and GO services in Kitchener and Cambridge before the GO station opens in the coming years.

What is flexible transit?

Flexible transit differs from conventional transit in that there is no fixed route, rides are shared, and vehicle supply is matched to demand. This type of transit service is useful in areas with low densities, indirect roads, and other physical barriers. While demand for transit may be low relative to other parts of the region, the need for transit in these areas is real and delivering cost-effective solutions requires creativity and community engagement.

Public consultation

The flexible service was designed following extensive consultation with people who live and work in Breslau, as well as those who want to travel to and from Breslau. The public consultation stage included:

  1. Online survey to learn about travel patterns and needs of potential users.
  2. In-depth interviews with recruited participants and stakeholders.
  3. Follow-up survey about elements of on-demand transit: shared trips, virtual and fixed stops, booking and vehicle type.
  4. Final survey about proposed on-demand transit service design.

There will be additional public feedback collected after the service has been in operation.

The Region of Waterloo and Metrolinx are working together to better meet the needs of travellers in and around the Region by developing new solutions in on-demand transit, with the objective of launching a pilot on-demand service in Breslau. These services typically include a mobile app that customers can use to request rides and see when their vehicle is arriving. Often, these services connect customers to other transit services and routes such as GRT buses, ION LRT or GO rail/bus service.

Building on two previous surveys carried out in 2020 we're now looking for your feedback on some preliminary preferred details, along with your answers to five quick questions about service hours (on both weekends and weekdays), the primary purpose for which you plan to use the service, how frequently you might use the service, and the amount of advanced notice between booking a trip and boarding a vehicle you would accept. Please note that this survey will be open until March 12, 2021.

How long will the survey take? The entire survey will take approximately 5 minutes. Try your best to answer all questions in the survey, but you may skip those that don’t apply.

What should I do if I have any issues with the survey? If you have any questions, concerns, or accessibility requests for this survey, please contact  William Towns at the Region of Waterloo (wtowns@regionofwaterloo.ca).

Survey information is collected by the Region of Waterloo (GRT) and Metrolinx for the purpose of designing an on-demand transit service for Breslau that reflects the unique requirements of project stakeholders, and will be accessed only by project team members from these organizations. It is collected pursuant to the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O.2001, c.25. Individual responses will be kept confidential. Aggregate survey data may be publicly disclosed as part of a summary report and/or supporting rationale for any service changes that may occur in the future. In certain circumstances, a representative of GRT may follow up with particular individuals and/or organizations for additional information related to the responses they provide.
