East Galt Cultural Heritage Landscape Study

In June 2022, the second of two Public Information Centre Open Houses (PIC) was held to introduce this project to the community. We are asking for community members to provide feedback that will help to create the guidelines of the East Galt Cultural Heritage Landscape. The survey will be available until September 13, 2022. In December 2020, Council approved the commencement of a Heritage Study Project for the East Galt Area in the City of Cambridge. This page is intended to provide information about the ongoing study process, highlight opportunities to get involved, and serve as a resource on cultural heritage landscapes. Updates will be posted to this web page throughout the duration of the project.

• East Galt has been identified as an important heritage area within the City of Cambridge since at least the early 1980s. In 1981, heritage consultant Paul Dilse studied many neighbourhoods in Galt to identify areas of significant cultural heritage value. The Oak Street neighbourhood was one of those areas.
• In 2008, The City of Cambridge Heritage Master Plan recognized the neighbourhood of Oak Street as a heritage “character area” and recommended further evaluation.
• In 2012, the City initiated a study of East Galt in partnership with the School of Architecture and the Heritage Resources Centre at the University of Waterloo. The boundary from this 2012 study is the basis for the preliminary boundary area for the current study.
• In December 2020, Cambridge City Council approved funding for the commencement of the East Galt Heritage Project in 2020.
• In September 2021, the East Galt Cultural Heritage Landscape Project officially began the Study Phase.
• In February 2022 the first public open house was held virtually to introduce the project to the community and share the findings of the project team.
