Share your feedback on the Community Canopy Planting Plan
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the community canopy plan this summer! We created a Story Map with the final planting plan, what we heard from community members, where we will plant trees this fall.

We are now seeking input on our planting plan. We created a map of places where neighbours said they’d like to plant trees and where the City said the trees could be planted. This fall we will plant 72 trees, based on that map. Help us understand the most important places to plant trees next year.
What we heard
To launch this pilot project in the spring, the City planted 28 large trees around the Chandler Mowat Community Center. Meanwhile, Reep gathered community feedback over the summer to inform a community planting plan.
Between April and July 2024, we asked for community members’ thoughts on trees and where to plant them through:
- Pop-up events at the Chandler Mowat Community Centre
- An online survey
- A ‘plant a pin’ mapping exercise
From the feedback, we learned:
- Over 60% of participants did not know about the City’s tree canopy target
- The most common reasons why trees are important to them are:
- Create more shade
- Add beauty
- Support local wildlife
- Improve mental health and wellbeing
- The most common areas where they would like trees planted are:
- Along the street
- In parks
- At the community centre
- Deciduous trees were the most popular type of tree neighbours would like planted
- Laurentian Park and various boulevards are the most favoured areas for tree planting
We compared resident feedback on where they desire trees with City expertise on where trees can be planted. We found 72 places where we could plant trees in public spaces this fall. This includes 30 large trees at Laurentian Park which Reep and volunteers will plant.
Oct 10. Celebration event
Residents in the Chandler Mowat neighbourhood are encouraged to visit Laurentian Park (715 Laurentian Drive) on Oct. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. Celebrate the first year of the project and learn how you can get involved, including applying to have a free tree planted in your yard!
Rain date: Oct. 11, 2024
This project is now complete. With your help, we planted a total of 154 new trees in the Chandler Mowat neighbourhood. We will plant another 70 trees in the neighbourhood beginning in 2025. For more information on City of Kitchener tree maintenance and planting, visit kitchener.ca
