This project is complete and the park is now open for use. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the redesign of the park. If you have any questions, please contact the Parks division at parks@kitchener.ca or 519-741-2345 (TTY:1-866-969-9994).

Westwood Park is an established neighbourhood park within a changing community. The green space was formerly shared with an adjacent school that has since been demolished and is being developed into townhomes. With this project, the intent is to revitalize the park by upgrading existing features to modern standards, and providing elements and features that reflect the needs of the community.

During the summer of 2021, the design team engaged with the public to better understand how the community uses the park. This feedback was used to inform design decisions. As a starting point for discussion, two concepts were developed to show what is possible in the space. After hearing feedback in person and online, and looking at what is needed to bring the park up to current standards, a final concept has been developed.

We are excited to reveal the final concept for Westwood Park. Please review the plan below and the overview video. More information can also be found through the links on this page, including timelines for next steps, additional documents, and a summary of engagement input.

Now that Westwood Park’s construction is complete, we’d like to bring your attention to a few important items.

Signs are up in the turfed areas requesting that the seed is not disturbed while it grows. Please stay off the seeded areas until we remove the signage. This will ensure that seed germinates and the grass thrives.

We also installed new signs at the entrance of the loop path. These remind residents not to use regulation-sized cricket balls in the practice cricket pitch. Also, dogs must be leashed at all times and picked up after. Please respect the park rules, which are in place for everyone’s safety and wellbeing.

You may have noticed water pooling in the park between the two entrances. This area is an infiltration gallery. Its purpose is to collect and hold water from the site while it drains into the soil, a process called infiltration. Sometimes the water drains slowly, so if you see water pooling there, do not be alarmed. That area of the park is functioning as intended.

We hope you enjoy the new and upgraded Westwood Park. Your patience and understanding have been greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your patience as the construction of Westwood Park wraps up.

A significant portion of the work has been completed with fine grading, hydroseeding, and planting remaining. The completion of this work depends on the weather but is currently scheduled for next week.

Once the hydroseed is applied, fencing will remain up for Approximately 3 weeks to protect the seed germination. Signage will also be installed asking park users to please stay off the grass as the seed establishes.

The remaining works include the infiltration gallery located at the park frontage which will be addressed this week and the hydroseeding which will begin once the weather allows (ideally slightly cooler and wetter conditions).

Site signage is all in place and will remain up until all work is complete.

The Phase 2 construction work is now underway at Westwood Park. The cricket pitch and walking loop path are the focus of the current work, which includes excavation and topsoil stripping.

Next week, the contractor will be working on completing the asphalt path and line painting. During that time, the playground and basketball court will be closed but will be re-opened once that work is complete. We anticipate the closure will last 4-5 days depending on weather conditions.

Westwood Park's second phase of construction is quickly approaching.

You may see some site fencing installed during this week which will fence off all areas except for the playground. The playground will remain open unless otherwise communicated. Areas that are not fenced off at this time may be fenced off later on and an update will be provided prior to any closures.

Construction will begin the second week of June. During the construction, please only use the unfenced amenities as the site will be undergoing construction. We appreciate your understanding!

Thank you everyone for your patience as we work through the final stages of the Westwood Park redevelopment.

Phase 1 of construction was completed in the fall of 2023, and we are excited to share that the second and final phase of construction will be starting this spring! Moser Landscape Group Inc. has been selected to complete the Phase 2 construction work. Construction will begin soon.

We will try to keep as much of the playground accessible as possible during construction. For certain portions of the work, the playground may have to be closed and an update will be provided prior to the closure. We appreciate your understanding as we work toward getting this park up and ready for use.

This phase of construction will look to complete the practice cricket pitch, install the walking loop path, reconstruct the infiltration gallery and finish up some final works.

There is a new container at the entrance of the park specifically for waste. It is a different style than before, it looks like a green 'T'. When walking your dog or other pet in the park, please pick up and deposit your pet’s waste into this container.

New garbage bins have also been installed at the front of the park. Please put your litter in these bins.

We are still working on getting grass established in the park. Since it is not yet fully established you may notice areas of dirt washing out. We are also in the process of reinstating the swing seats in the park.
