Kitchener has a growing network of routes that allow residents to walk, roll or bike across the city. To improve these, residents have asked for better signage to make it easier to connect to where they want to go.

Based on the Cycling and Trails Master Plan, we identified eight major neighbourhoods. We also identified eight priority routes to connect them. We gave each route a name, colour, and number to make them easy to identify and navigate.

Tell us if we got it right by sharing your feedback. We will then revise the proposed route network and the associated signage.

Thanks for your question. During the engagement process for the Cycling and Trails Master Plan, the feedback we received showed high demand for improvements to wayfinding and signage. We have improved our signage since then, including the new signs on the Iron Horse trail. As we continue to add signage across the City, we will be incorporating the branding of routes into those wayfinding signs. Most of the work will be new signs along the eight routes that have been identified. There will be a few signs which will be 're-stickered', but the cost of this process is much lower than implementing a new sign.

If you have time to take the survey, we would really appreciate your feedback. As someone who uses the signs on the Iron Horse trail, your comments would be very helpful.

Thank you for your question! The routes that have been proposed are intended to connect major neighbourhoods, and the Walter Bean Trail does not provide a direct connection to any of the major neighbourhoods. Additionally, the routes are meant to be 'All Ages and Abilities', and some parts of the Walter Bean Trail cannot be paved due to the proximity of the river and flooding.

Like the Iron Horse Trail and the TransCanada Trail, the Walter Bean Trail already has its own branding so we wouldn’t want to replace the name. These existing trails will still be included as destinations in the proposed wayfinding and branding project and will continue to be included in online and printed maps.
