Project overview
On January 15, 2024, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks directed the Region of Waterloo and the Township of Wilmot to assume all responsibility for the current Petersburg water system as of May 13, 2024. This change came with the current owner discontinuing operations of this system.
In Wilmot, the Region is responsible for treating municipal drinking water and the Township is responsible for the municipal distribution system that provides water to their customers.
The current water system supplies water to one property on Deerfield extension, nine properties on Deerfield Avenue, 31 properties on Alice Crescent, four properties on Redford Drive, eight properties on Notre Dame Drive and nine properties on Snyder's Road East, as well as a community park and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Update, January 29, 2025
As part of the ongoing supply system upgrades occurring this week (January 27 - January 31), the Region is refilling the reservoir which has caused temporary water discolouration due to sediment disturbance. In older iron water systems such as this, these occurrences are common during routine and preventative maintenance. Although the water may look different, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) has confirmed that it remains safe to drink however there may be some temporary changes in taste.
Regional staff has been on-site today and refilled the reservoir at 9:30 a.m. Township staff flushed the system at two locations around 11 a.m. until the water remained clear. Chlorine residuals have also been taken which align with Ministry standards.
Please be assured that this is a common occurrence. For urgent concerns, please contact the on-call number at 519-998-1862. General service inquiries can be directed to publicworks@wilmot.ca

Routine maintenance
The Region of Waterloo, in coordination with Wilmot Township, will be conducting routine maintenance work on the Petersburg Water System to ensure we continue to provide you with a reliable, quality local water supply system.
From January 27–31, 2025, maintenance work will be carried out on the water supply well located at the end of Deerfield Avenue. During this time, you may notice several trucks and a crane in the area as the team works diligently to complete this necessary maintenance.
Please be assured that this work is routine and is being conducted to maintain the high standards of the water supply system. We do not anticipate any disruption to your normal water supply service during this time.
Please contact Karl Belan, Region of Waterloo at kbelan@regionofwaterloo.ca(External link) or by phone at 226-750-4796, if you have any questions.
Update, September 27, 2024
The Township of Wilmot and the Region of Waterloo are transitioning the former Knipfel Private Drinking Water System to the Petersburg Distribution Water System.
At our last meeting on April 4, we committed to providing more detailed information on water pricing, billing schedules, and costs to upgrade the current infrastructure when available. More information is now available and a letter, outlining the expenses incurred to date and the estimated capital costs expected in the future, was delivered to the system users and a copy was mailed through Canada Post. The treatment and distribution system upgrade costs detailed in the letter, and potential payment options, are not finalized. This will be determined by each respective Council.
We appreciate that this will impact each household in different ways, and Township and Regional staff are available to meet with you one-on-one to discuss this in further detail.
