Improving access to ION stations
We are looking for ideas or suggestions to improve access to ION transit stations.
The City of Waterloo is undertaking a new program to support the creation of a multi-modal first/last-mile transportation network, that means that people can easily get to and from transit using different modes of transportation. This program will enhance access to and from the ION Light Rail Transit stations by walking or rolling. The program builds on the City of Waterloo’s Transportation Master Plan, to develop, track, and implement short to long term active transportation (cycling, walking etc.) improvements around the LRT (light rail transit) stations in Waterloo.
This program aims to address small fixes like adding curb ramps to improve accessibility, new street crossings, enhancements to existing routes, and amenities like benches and bike parking. It will also strengthen support for priorities and identify opportunities to be considered for both city and regional capital projects, such as new sidewalks and bikeways around stations, lighting, and intersection and road crossing improvements.
The program will help to track and organize ideas, to improve connectivity over time and align with other opportunities such as new land developments and privately owned lands near LRT stations.
The program will include preparation of an action plan for implementing opportunities over the coming years. In addition to medium and longer term initiatives, the initial focus will be on `quick wins’ and priority actions that can be implemented in the short term.
