This project supports the Region of Waterloo's strategic focus area(s):

Changing the way people connect with Waterloo Region

Project background

The Kitchener Central Transit Hub project focuses on developing one central, convenient and efficient transit hub at King and Victoria Street in Kitchener. This transit hub will connect ION, GRT, GO, VIA, pedestrians, and cyclists in one convenient location. It's also the region's connection to the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor.

The development of the new hub also brings opportunities to update and connect roads and facilities in the area. One of these projects is the Victoria Street Modification project.

The development of the new hub also brings opportunities to update and connect roads and facilities in the area. One of these projects is the Victoria Street Modification project.

This project will be a collaborative effort between the Region and Metrolinx and will be done in two phases.

Phase 1
We are currently in phase 1 with the Region leading the construction of the following:

  • A pedestrian bridge over King St. connecting the multi-use path directly to the station.
  • A bus loop that brings two GRT station stops into the area and three Metrolinx (GO) bus stops.
  • A large pedestrian ramp to provide accessible access to the station platform and multi-use path.
  • Pickup and drop-off area at the centre of the site.
  • Off-site parking lot.
  • Duke Street underpass to further connect the multi-use path to the neighborhoods across the rail corridor.
  • Site development to enhance Kitchener’s downtown core.

Our partner, Metrolinx, will lead the following construction in Phase 1:

  • Platform infrastructure.
  • Modification to the tracks.

More information on Metrolinx’s work can be found on the Kitchener Line GO communication page.

Phase 2 — transit facility
The design and construction of the transit hub facility encompass the majority of the scope for Phase 2. We’ll move into detailed design following funding confirmation from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
