October 2026 update: Kitchener Central Transit Hub project milestones

October 6, 2026

Several key milestones for the Kitchener Central Transit Hub were reached over the spring and summer.

The Site Plan Application was submitted to the City of Kitchener in early June. A site plan application shows how a proposed development will be laid out and designed on a specific property.

The project team also received the 90 per cent drawings and specifications in late July, marking a major step toward completing the detailed design package. This stage of design provides a more advanced look at key project elements, including the transit hub building, site layout, underground services, passenger areas and supporting infrastructure.

Early construction-related work is also progressing. A tender for the partial demolition of the non-heritage portion of the Rumpel Felt building closed in September. This work is needed to prepare the site for the future transit hub entrance and passenger pick-up and drop-off area. On-site utility investigation work was recently completed to confirm existing underground conditions and support future construction planning.

Work is continuing to protect heritage and environmental features on the site as well. A permit has been submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Service for proposed modifications to the Rumpel Felt chimney so it can be retained as habitat for Chimney Swifts.

The public art process is moving ahead. Stage 1 of the public art selection process took place in June, and final artist selection is expected in November.

The Region continues to advance design, approvals and early site preparation work to support future construction of the Kitchener Central Transit Hub. Substantial completion of the hub is currently expected in 2030, with related site work targeted to be finished by the end of 2031.
