Project Overview
With a generous gift from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities the City of Cambridge is building an outdoor, inclusive multi sport court in Hespeler Optimist Park! The City and Jumpstart are working collaboratively to design the court in 2023/2024 and build the court in 2024/2025. The City has hired a consultant firm - The MBTW Group- to assist in selecting the final court location and to prepare detailed design drawings.
Considering the Jumpstart requirements for size, site conditions, and accessibility, three possible locations for the inclusive multi sport court were approved by City Council for further investigation:
•Churchill Park - Southwest section (200 Christopher Drive)
•Lions Can-Amera Park (305 Saginaw Parkway)
•Hespeler Optimist Park (640 Ellis Road)
Feedback from a public information session and survey#1 in June of 2023, resulted in selecting Hespeler Optimist Park for the court location. Basketball, tennis, pickleball and volleyball were the preferred standard sports activities. For adapted sports, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and tennis were most popular.
In September 2023, a second in-person public information session was held at the Hespeler Arena and a second survey was undertaken to obtain feedback on two court options. Court Program Option 2 was selected by the community. This option included a large basketball court with two basketball keys for informal basketball play as well as a larger second court that can accommodate, tennis as well as volleyball and pickleball. A free play area as well as spectator seating, picnic tables, a shade canopy, trees accessible parking and bleachers are also featured in this design option.
The final design is being prepared and will reflect Court Option 2 with minor modifications that incorporate additional community input from Survey #2.
