The Region of Waterloo is conducting a Roundabout Pedestrian Safety Pilot to help make roundabouts easier and more comfortable for everyone to use as a part of our safe and efficient transportation network.

The pilot will introduce new safety measures to roundabouts across the region:

  1. Raised crosswalks: The crosswalk is slightly higher than the road, creating a smoother and more visible crossing experience for pedestrians and making drivers slow down.
    Pilot location: Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road
  2. Flashing lights: Button-activated bright flashing lights that alert road users when someone is crossing.
    Pilot location: Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North
  3. Flashing lights and raised crosswalks: A combination of both button-activated flashing lights and raised crosswalks.
    Pilot location: Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard

Each pilot location will also include improved lighting.

Resident feedback, collected data, and technical evidence from the pilot will provide a strong foundation for long-term decision making on roundabout design. A final report from the pilot will be shared with the Regional Council including recommendations on future changes to new and existing roundabouts. The project responds to the Region’s commitment to pedestrian safety while advancing the Region’s strategic priority of Climate Aligned Growth.

Project update, June 2026: All construction has been completed and data collection devices have been installed. Tell us about your experiences using the roundabouts and crossings in the survey below. Your input will inform future improvements and help us prioritize safety for all road users.

Construction update, April 2026: Construction was planned between July and September 2025. Due to supply issues and weather, construction was delayed. Work continues on installing the flashing lights at Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North and Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road.
